At Don Whitley Scientific, we’re really proud to have our very own in-house, GLP-compliant, microbiology laboratory, which plays a vital role not only in providing customer insights that help shape the design of our specialist instrumentation, but also in supporting the wider scientific community.
Since 1991, our contract microbiology services have been relied upon to deliver accurate, high-quality results, from routine analysis and quality control through to major research and development programmes for multinational pharmaceutical companies.
To give you an insight into the types of projects the DWS Laboratory has been working on this year, two of our microbiologists, Kirsty McTear and Eleanor Burke, share a snapshot of recent studies they have carried out for clients.
Kirsty McTear
“What I enjoy most about working in the DWS Laboratory is the variety of projects we get involved in. Recently, I conducted broth microdilution MIC testing, evaluating a selection of antibiotics against a Bifidobacterium strain for a UK company specialising in microbiology products and services. The work was carried out anaerobically using the Whitley A35 Workstation.
I also carried out viable cell counting to determine the viability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in animal feed additives for a client in the agriculture sector, using the Whitley WASP Touch as part of the study protocol.”
Eleanor Burke
“One of the most interesting studies I’ve worked on recently involved evaluating a new breast milk storage bag using UHT milk to assess the survival of beneficial bacteria. This included Bifidobacterium longum subsq. infantis and Lactobacillus fermentum, and I carried out the experiment under both chilled and frozen conditions. The study was conducted for a UK-based commercial client, and samples were processed both anaerobically using a Whitley A95 Workstation and aerobically with incubators.”
